Inspiration from... Katy Perry?

Dude, yes. If you have not listened to some teen pop rock in the last year or so, start with Katy Perry. I don't like all her songs, but I like a good few of them.

In particular, Firework and Roar. Because you know how this publishing business is like a meat grinder? No? Well, it is. Pretend you're this fabulous cut of meat. Kobe beef or something. You go in, expecting everything to be awesome, you'll be cooked to a perfect medium-rare, and you'll be juicy, and have this butter-herb sauce, and everyone will love you.

And then... You get ground up and formed into who-knows-what-but-it-ain't-a-meatball, and drowned with some sick brown gravy from a packet, and then bypassed on the buffet line by even the most forgiving of diners.

Yeah. Publishing can be like that. But Katy Perry has your solution. You could say that the 213 times I've listened to Roar in the past couple of weeks makes it my theme song. Okay, fine. It's totally my theme song.

Watch it. Listen to it. Love it.

(I'll admit the jungle theme is a little strange... Just go with it.)

My favorite lyrics:
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

Sometimes you just need to roar.

I also love Firework. Not necessarily the bra she wears... Can't believe I just used the word bra on my blog.

Anyway, I think sometimes I can relate to the lyrics of this song rather well. Let's examine.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under?
Scream but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you?

(Uh, yes. To all of the above.)

And later:
You don't have to feel like a wasted space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

So yeah. I think I'm going to do that. Ignite the light and let it shine. Own the night. Roar.

ROAR.

  1. I was listening to Katy Perry's lyrics to Firework around the 10th time my daughter played the song and really noticed how inspirational the words were. Encouragement and a bit of uplifting can come from many places, even some not quite expected.

  2. You roar, girl! Show the world what you've got!
I'll be sending out my own roar from the far southern winds.
It's what we need to do. Ignite and shine. A part of our light is in our gifts - and light shines for others to see. So it should be with our gifts and talents too.
So let's ROAR, and share that spark and passion!

  3. You beat me to this :-) I've had a blog post 'to do' with Katy's name written all over it. It's sitting in a folder ready to write lol. With her videos and inspiration thoughts. When I heard this song a few weeks ago it was exactly what I thought too. I was hooked on Firework years ago and then this one came out. Time to get to my to-do list and share how I found out about ROAR. And gonna link you! :-) Great minds think alike!!!!! :-))

  4. Actually when i heard it for the first time I was going to post something on Facebook and thought nah, I'll save it for a blog post cuz I also thought not everyone is going to agree with me or bash on Katy. I love that you found inspiration in it too!!!

  9. I love both of these songs. Firework is also my 5yo's favorite song. Haha. We watched the Katy Perry movie as a family for my other daughter's 14th bday (um, yeah, had to fast-forward some parts), but Katy said to one of her fans that her favorite song to sing is Firework. (Of course, that's before Roar existed.) The first time I heard Roar, I envisioned how quickly every high school pep rally would use it as their theme song. -)

  10. There are lots of reasons why I love this post but I think I love that you compared writing to being like meat. And then you made me a little hungry for the thing before it became *the thing.*

  13. I love the lyrics. Not sure why the push up bra and lots of cleavage has to play a part in roaring. Guess it a distraction for the males?

  16. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've watched this video several times. Or that I watched Katy Perry's movie on Netflix the other day with my honey boo boo child. Okay, maybe a little ashamed...but not much. She's got some great messages to share. (Also some not so great messages...but mostly great). ;)

  17. ROAR has turned into my theme song lately too! I've belted it out many times since first hearing it. It really does make me feel like I can do anything. :)

  18. Definitely inspiring. I hadn't heard the song (tho heard OF it) until I saw it on Martha R's blog. LOL, oh my gosh, I love your description of the Kobe beef getting ground up into who-knows-what and drowned with a sick brown gravy. Funny cuz it's often oh-so-true. :)
