This and That

This: I didn't start this post with "Okay" "So" or "Dude." I win.

That: I have found a new song that's been on repeat this week. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. Go here to see the cool video. And HERE to see a super-cool cover.

This: I am outlining. I hate it. I hate it hard. Tips? Tricks? Good beheaders?

That: OH-MY-HECK-DID-YOU-SEE-ONCE-UPON-A-TIME?? I so didn't see that coming. I sort of feel like they did three seasons' worth of cliffhangers in the last 15 minutes. Yeah?

This: I am going domestic this year. Planting corn and beets. I will be canning and pickling at some point this summer too. I know. You thought all I did was sit at the computer and write. *wink*

That: Four more teaching days this year! Aaaah!

This: This week's YA Book Blogger tour is in full swing! Make sure you enter to win a SURRENDER ARC by visiting each blog:

Tell me another that!

  2. How fun is that to be using your own writing in the classroom. That would seriously blow me away. Go you.

  3. 4 days??? We have 5 more weeks - we don't finish until June 29...

Good luck with your garden! We did one for years when the kids were younger - now there's a garage there :)

  4. I'm with Jemi. My kids don't finish school until June 29. Yay!!!! But they don't go back to school until September, so it evens out.

  5. I have Once upon a Time taped. I'll have to watch it soon.

A little jealous you're off for the summer. Besides having to work, my boss is off on a medical and we have to do her work.

  6. Ahh I love that song. But I hadn't heard this cover, so thanks for sharing!

I just scrolled down to check the beginning of your posts, wow you really do start with 'Okay, so' a LOT. I didn't notice this until now :P

  7. I love love love Once Upon a Time! One of the best season finales I've seen in awhile.

  8. THAT is so cool you're doing a garden. The canning thing is something I'd have to enjoy vicariously through you :-)

THIS Once Upon a Time show must hurry to Netflix so I can finally watch it.

THAT is okay, you know, the outlining thing. Because you're probably on a schedule, I can't tell you to just let it marinate for a while. But I would recommend keeping a few slices of cooked bacon nearby just in case you get a bit frustrated. Bacon=yummy=happy thoughts=sparks can happen.

  9. I know! Once Upon A Time just blew me away. I am wondering where there will go from here though. It felt like the story was over because they broke the curse.

  10. Planting and pickling beets! That is very domestic of you. I love it.

  11. I love that song.
I also love Once Upon a Time but I'm a couple episodes back. I only watch it when I'm editing photos. And I've been putting that off trying to edit my book-o-rama.

And beets? I feel weird about that. do people really eat them?

Last, are you ready to get your game on? muah ha ha. We should make matching outfits for our tennis match.

  12. Is it strange that if I were to give you advice about outlining, I'd just point to your presentation from Storymakers about the beatsheet and say "excellent outline guide"?

Oo...this is one of those "eat your words" moment, isn't it?

  13. That cover video is awesome. I was wondering when that guy on the right was going to do something.

  14. The song was stuck in my head last night, it played over and over, just the chorus until I fell to sleep.

  15. Only four more teaching days? Wow your kids get out early.
Bet outlining trick I know is to play your story in your head like a movie and write down the highlights.

  16. I love the Goyte song, but my kids are getting pretty sick of me belting it out in the car.

  17. Sounds like a fun summer. And grr, I am so far behind on Once Upon a Time.

Ah, the countdown to your book release is so close. Can't wait!

  18. I know every word to Somebody I used to Know...and I sing it quite often to the despair of my family.

I also am still freaked over Once Upon a Time. Still saved on my DVR so I can watch it again! LOVE that show.

No advice for outlining. Just sympathy.

  19. Once Upon a Time...ugh. I was so ready for Rumplestiltskin to rip the town apart saving Belle, and instead...not even a kiss? Really? Robert Carlyle is still brilliant and amazing, but...seriously?

  20. AH! Once Upon a Time! AH! Somebody that I Used to Know. AH! Gardening. It's like I'm borrowing your brain patterns or something.

For me, my oldest child just graduated from preschool. AH!

  21. Saw OUAT too! Only I kind of did see it coming. Because I'm a nerd like that.

This: I'm anxious for summer, and also dreading it. Writing time might = zero.

That: Next week my oldest son is graduating from high school and my youngest is graduating from elementary school. HOLY FREAK. I am not that old.

  22. I really struggle with outlining too. And drafting. And editing. And all of it but I still love it!

And Once Upon A Time - was that crazy or what?! I'm wondering how on earth they will start up the next season though. I want that evil queen gone!

  23. I normally outline but I'm not loving it either. I'm so excited for your garden! That's awesome! I love growing tomatoes. Not only do they yield delicious fruit, they serve as a very "calming" moment in the day when I take care of them. :)

  24. Yes, Once Upon A Time's season finale ended with a freaking worse than Lauren Oliver's Delirium series cliffhanger. Ok, not that bad, but you get the point.

    Good luck with outlining!

  25. My daughter keeps telling me to watch Once Upon A Time, but I keep forgetting about it. Maybe I'll catch it next season. Yay for you planting corn and beets! I miss having a garden.
Elana, I remember the first blog post of yours that I read and you talked about how much you love bacon! I love it, too, but not enough to mention it in my post, but it left an impression on me. I just read a blog post with interesting facts about bacon and unusual bacon-flavored products. I thought of you. Here's the link in case you want to check it out:

I know you're busy with the book launch, and I'm looking forward to reading Surrender!

  26. I hear you about outlining! While it's a useful tool, when I sit down and try to force myself to outline, I often come up blank--unless I'm having a spectacularly genius day--but those are unfortunately few and far between. Madeline L'Engle said, "Inspiration usually comes during the work, rather than before it." Truer words were never spoken! :D Best of luck!

  27. Good for you on the domestic/gardening plans! I started watching Once Upon a Time on the computer since I don't have TV channels, but then they started skipping shows and deleted some. Sniff. So I had to stop watching.

I LOVE that Gotye song, and the WOTE version almost even better! Ha, and have you seen the parody of the WOTE-5-people-playing-one-guitar version? Funeeeeee, and well done! Here's the linky:
