Random Acts of Publicity

Okay, so it's Random Acts of Publicity (RAP) this week. I'll be talking publicity, and why it's important to authors. I'll also be highlighting some of my favorite reads in 2011--some with giveaways!

Here's the low-down about RAP: It’s all about your friend’s book.

The 3rd Annual Random Acts of Publicity, September 6-8, is a week to celebrate your friend’s book, or your favorite book, by doing a Random Act of Publicity: Blog, Link, Like, Review, or Talk about the book . (BLLuRT it Out!)

You can click here for FAQs. (Anyone can participate!)

Today's RAP victim: VARIANT by Robison Wells. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book, and it blew me away. I read it on an airplane, and I literally gasped out loud about mid-way through the book. I was blindsided, and it's been a very long time since that's happened in a book.

It's being classified as dystopian, but it's not futuristic. The story takes place in a closed society, and I think that's why it has the label it does. No matter what, if you like a compelling, well-written story, you should keep your eye on VARIANT.

And I'm giving away my ARC! (VARIANT comes out October 4.)

Now, usually, you don't have to do anything but leave a comment to win. I'm easy like that. But this time, I want you to BLLuRT in order to enter!

All you have to do is Blog, Link, Like, Review, or Talk about your favorite book. Anytime this week. Then come back and fill out this form. You'll be entered to win the books I'm giving away this week. (And there is more than just the ARC of VARIANT!)

Here's the BLLuRT's for Rob's book. Please follow/like (they all open in separate windows, so it's easy to click and follow).

What's one of your favorite books?

  2. I'm digging this Random Acts of Publicity idea! Too bad I hadn't heard of it sooner! Great choice! I love the cover, breathtaking! I look forward to see who's next on the list of awesome!

  3. Variant sounds breathtaking. I dare not read it at the moment, as my WIP is set in a closed dystopian society. I will definitely give it a read once my first draft is done, though!

  4. This sounds like an awesome book. And I hadn't heard about it. Thanks so much. I added it to my Goodreads list. Can't wait to see what you have coming up this week.

  8. Elana--Thanks for the great book rec, and also--I think your link list for this author (and book) smart. Too often we forget about all the easy ways we can help an author. Facebook. Goodreads. :)

  9. Dang! Already following.

I feel like a broken record talking about my favorite books. I'll name one I haven't talked about much:

A Storm of Swords, by George R.R. Martin.

  10. This book sounds amazing. Going to add it on Goodreads now!

I read Ultraviolet by RJ Anderson a while back and it's wonderful!

  11. Variant sounds cool, Elana!!
Right now I'm reading an ARC of The White Assassin by Hilary Wagner, an action packed MG novel!!

  12. I've been eyeing this one! I really need to get through my pile a little faster. Trying hard. Already have a few books I've read that I haven't reviewed either. So backed up. But this one sounds fantastic.

By the way, LOVE the RAP! What a great idea, and so characteristic of your generosity. <3 <3 <3

  13. This is a great idea! I'm definitely participating.

Funny, I just blurbed/hyped my friend's soon-to-be-published novel over on my blog.

  17. I may have to add this to my list. I've got the idea of a dystopian setting germinating in my head and am trying to branch out. I haven't read much dystopian so I'm trying to broaden my reading horizons.

One of my favorites of the year was Hereafter by Tara Hudson. I got an ARC of it and absolutely fell in love.

  18. What a cool idea! And this book sounds great. What's interesting is that I posted about a favorite author and decided to give away a collection of her books this morning, so I'm very much on board with the BLLuRT!

  19. Great idea, Elana. This book sounds intriguing and exciting. One of my favorite books as a child found in a garage sale was THE NIGHT LIFE OF THE GODS by Thorne Smith (the writer of TOPPER) :

a reserved scientist becomes romantically entangled with a tall, wild female leprechaun who brings certain statues of Greek gods to life in the Roaring Twenties. Hi-jinks ensue, Roland

  20. I LOVE this idea. You are just made of awesome. One of my favorite books that I read recently was Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes by Denise Grover Swank. It was so good I laughed until I cried. Not many books can make me do that!

  21. This a great idea. One of the books I read recently is Thirteen Reasons Why - it was very thought provoking.

  22. Now that's really cool. Bummer I already have the support group posts this week.

  23. OOOH - this sounds great. I am going to try and squeeze in a book for this because I have the perfect one to share! Also, I am dying to read this now. I am always happy with a book that can blindside me. It doesn't happen often so when it does, that author gets major kudos! So glad you shared!

  24. Hey Elana! I have to tell you this funny story - I was at someone's blog last week (for the campaign) (I can't remember whose) and she was so excited to have the great honor of having Elana Johnson as a follower now!

Ahhhhhh! I want Elana Johnson as a follower! I've thought you were spectacular for quite some time now as I attended your much-loved-by-me presentations and your book launch. (I'm even in the signing line in your book launch photo you posted on your blog!)

Please Elana, please won't you be my follower?! I want to have such great happiness as that other blogger!

    Shameless aren't I?! :D

And I love this RAP awesomeness! I REALLY want to read that book now!

  29. This book sounds like it has a great premise. I've added Variant to my to read list and Like the author on my FB.

And I really enjoy the RAP. So fantastic!!

  30. I'm loving the RAP idea! My favorite book would have to be *A Separate Peace* by John Knowles, even though it's lacking in fantasy and paranormalcy and all my other "favorite book" requirements. It's amazing. Other than that I love the Uglies series, the Hunger Games trilogy, and the Inkheart trilogy.

    Variant sounds great!

  31. Yes, RAP sounds like a swell idea... the book i am in love with as of late is: The Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Variant sounds really good. I've seen it around, but never read such a concise and clear description. Adding it to my list.

I feel like pretty much my entire blog is a RAP movement. That's turned into my whole focus primarily: highlighting books and authors I love or who I anticipate loving--in the book sense of course...lol! The only difference is I've never labled a post Random Act of Publicity. Maybe I will one day...Love the sentiment though :-)

  33. Brilliant idea!! This is my crazy back to school week, but I'm gonna try!

Book sounds awesome too - thanks for the tip :)

  35. RAP is such a wonderful idea! I try to BLLURT my friends' books and I love this push to do so!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love it! This is a great idea, Elana! And I can't wait to read VARIANT. I've heard such great things about it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Another one for the TBR list! Thanks...and I've been hearing all week about RAP, but I need to get the skinny...

  38. Variant was quite good. When it started, it felt quite cliche of a situation, but immediately the author turned that on its head!
