Celebrating Indie Style

Okay, so today is the day to show independent bookstores some love. This is the brainchild of Lisa & Laura Roecker, and I do whatever I can to be all up in their brainz.

For my contribution to the "I heart Indies" celebration, I'm going to talk about The King's English. First, a picture:

Isn't that the cutest little house you've ever seen? Well, it is. And inside the house are all these books in all these different little rooms. My favorite is the children's room, of course.

I love the people at The King's English because when I ask them for a book recommendation, they know what to get me. And they know where it is in their store. They know everything.

I love The King's English.

What independent bookstore do you love?

Participate in this show-the-love fest by signing up on LiLa's blog. You can also tweet with the hashtag #IheartIndies on twitter.

And that's not all we're celebrating! Oh, no. I am having my launch party for POSSESSION next Wednesday at none other than The King's English. To show my support of them, I'll be buying a book there FOR ONE OF YOU.

That's right. A contest. Leave a comment on this post and you could win! What? A book. I don't know which one, but maybe we can work together on that, okay? Okay. Enter by Sunday at 10 PM MST and the winner will be announced next Monday!

We have a great Indie bookstore--Nicola's Bookstore. And I remember when Borders was an Indie, which makes it harder to watch them in bankruptcy.

Thanks for the contest.

Adorable house!!! We had one that looked almost just like that here (used book store) but sadly it closed. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut, around the corner from my house (yes, very dangerous) is the Book Nook. My daughter is determined to get a job there (also very dangerous). :) She has books and gifts and sells second hand books to raise money to send things oversees to the troops. Good books and good causes. I'm there!!!

I'd also love to win a free book. :) SO excited for possession to hit the shelves!!! Congrats!

Buttonwood Books! Great place, great staff...sadly, becoming more "toys and games" than books, but I can't blame them...

I'd love to win a mystery book. Cambridge has a great indie called "Porter Square Books", which I spend way to much money at. For Mother's Day and our wedding anniversary, my husband got me gift cards to the bookstore.

Online, Borders, local - I have a hard time not buying books!

I love the King's English too! If I wasn't overly swamped with end of school year events I would come on Wednesday...

I'd like to live there please. Thanks for spreading the love, Elana!

Elana this one is fabulous! I would love to visit there!!! Too cute! Had I known this awesome was happening I would have for sure mentioned Blue Willow Bookshop here in Houston.

Not only to they showcase awesome authors for signings but the staff is warm and inviting. Fit for children and adults anything book you desire they'll be able to help you find!

PS - I mentioned your book on the blog today in a roundabout way. Trust me... you're interested :)

Oh, this is such a great idea, Elana! Indies are awesome and I hate to see them getting obscured under the giant tidal waves of the big chain stores.
One of my favourites is 'One World' bookstore that we have here.
Any which way, I just love getting me some book love :)

VERY quaint. And I can not believe your book launches next week!!

Love it! I wish we had a store like that here.

It is a beautiful house. I wish we had a bookstore here like that. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com

I can't wait to see King's English next week! :D

I wish I could be there. The indie here that I'd love to support more (it's a challenge to get down there and park-paid parking and all) is pretty cool. I first went there for an author signing a couple months ago. I'd love to win a book. Um, if you need ideas for which book to buy I have a list...

Oh, neat!

My city has over half a million people living in it. I am embarrassed to say that we have exactly three bookstores: one very tiny and afro-centric indie, one slightly larger (about the size of the women's restroom) chain-bookstore in a hidden corner of the shopping mall, and one large chain-bookstore about a 7-minute drive from my house. The large chain-bookstore is my home away from home: the staff are friendly, they encourage (and stock!) local authors, and if they don't have the book I want they'll order it in for me. I love them.

There's an indie in Toronto called TinLids that's pretty neat. It's a warehouse-turned-bookstore, so there's kind of a surreal feel to it. Big and vacant-yet-cozy feeling.

I'm always down for a free book. Unfortunately I can't think of an independent bookstore in my area unless you count Powell's books. Pretty unfortunate.

I used to love to go to the Book Barn. So old and cozy, and just CRAMMED with books. Oh, the book love! I would love to enter your contest!

Woohoo! I love the Kings English. IT just so cute. Can't wait for your signing there. =)

Sad to say that all the years I lived in Salt Lake I never went to The King's English. If I can manage a trip west (from Virginia) in the fall, I'll definitely go there!

And I'm eager to read Possession. I wish you the best for it!

have to agree! TKE is such a cute store with amazing staff. They are so supportive and awesome. I just love them!

I have heard SO MUCH about that book store! I can't tell you how I wish they were close to me. :-)

Melody said...

Oooh, the name of the bookstore (THE KING'S ENGLISH) just makes me happy by itself. A book from there would be...*swoon*. :) So yes, count me in for that! :)

Michael Di Gesu said...

What a great name for a bookstore... It is wonderful! I wish I had something like that around where I live.

What a nice thing to do Elana.... I have a quick question for you. Are you going on a book signing tour? And if so When and Where. I would love to meet you and get a signed copy of POSSESSION....

I Love The King's English! I've been up there a few times for Harry Potter stuff, you know, books, wands, hats, etc. Fun and friendly.
What time is your book signing? I'd actually like to get a copy of Possession, so please enter me in your contest. Thanks bunches!

So cute! When my family used to vacation on Cape Cod we'd always stop in this bookstore in a large house. There were two stories and hardwood floors and plush couches and chairs. It was the perfect place to browse.

Shari said...

Definitely The Purple Cow. Best Indie Bookstore. Ever.

Can't wait for your launch! Squee!!

Faith E. Hough said...

I've heard so many great things about the King's English...definitely have to go there someday!
I was crushed last week to discover that my favorite indie bookstore had just closed! I hope sharing the indie love will prevent that from happening to many more...

Eric said...

Wow, what an awesome idea. The indie you highlight here sounds great too. I am almost ashamed to admit that I haven't really gone to indie bookstores much, but I will change. I promise. Now please put the belt down and promise not to beat me severely. :)

Marsha Sigman said...

Ok, that may be the most awesome indie bookstore I have seen so far. And I love the title. The closest indie to me right now is Blue Willow Bookshop in Houston. It is pretty cool and they hold a lot of author signings.

A long time ago I took a beginning business class and we had to create our own business idea and plan, etc. Mine was a small indie bookstore called 'Pages in Tyme' and every week I would have a story hour and make everyone dress up in costumes from the story while I read aloud...but you know it's not like I spent a lot of time on it or anything. Want to see my logo?lol

Gail said...

Wish I could be there for your launch party!!! It looks like a fabulous place! Oh, and if I win this contest, I of course, want....POSSESSION!
Come check out my indie choice if you have time.

Riv Re said...

Oooh. Pwetty bookstore! I wish I could see it in person! (Hey, maybe when I'm big and famous ad touring the world, signing millions of copies of my book...)(I can dream, can't ?)
Thanks for the added giveaway! I LOVE my indie to pieces!

Thanks for the giveaway!

I am incredibly blessed to live just 15 minutes from Publisher's Weekly Bookstore of the Year Anderson's Books (Naperville, IL). They bring in amazing authors, tons of YA and children's in particular. I also have to give a shout out to Kazoo Books in my hometown of Kalamazoo, Mich. How can you resist a store with its own cat skulking around?

Mary E Campbell said...

Love the King's English and all the little rooms are like secret hideaways. Can't wait to see you Wednesday.

I love the King's English. That place makes me want to blow all my money on books.

D'awww :3. That bookstore is the CUTEST!

I love a good indie store. Especially ones with cats in them. There is such a good feel when you go in there, especially if you get that musty-used-book smell in the mix.

I love this idea!

ali cross said...

I had no idea about Indie stores until I hooked up with you and the other local gals and we went to The King's English the first time. I've been in love ever since!

Jordan McCollum said...

Whoa, Elana, how did you get Disney channel to advertise for you? I just saw a commercial that said Join the Resistance. (There was something about a platypus, too... Do you have a secret agent platypus in your book? That's weird.)

;)!

Oh wow, what an adorable little house! My dream job is to be an indie bookseller, and that is definitely my dream store. What a wonderful experience it must be to go there!

THat's a beautiful looking store! I wish we still had an indie or two, but our last one closed about a decade ago.

I keep hearing amazing things about The King's English. This is just one of the MANY things calling me to Utah. *sigh* Guess I'll have to move there soon!

I don't know if Bookman's in AZ counts as Indie, but it's definitely my favorite USED bookstore <3

Believe it or not, I don't think I'd ever been to an indie book store - until I went to King's English last year. The feeling of the place shouts "buy a book!"

Leslie S. Rose said...

The KIng's English reminds me of The Shop Around the Corner in "You've Got Mail." Those adorable indie stores make you believe fairy tales can come true.

I <3 TKE! Whenever I go there I feel like I am at the cute book store in You've Got Mail.

I just wish I could teleport there - it isn't THAT far away but with 1-15 construction - its a bugger to drive to.

Congrats on your launch this week, I am very happy for you. :)
