Things You Should Know

Oh, my heck. Where do I even start? While last week was the week of "What else can go wrong?" this week was the week of "Awesome!"

It's all about the ups and downs, you know?

So let's dive in.

1. I bought a new car. Okay, *I* didn't buy the new car, nor do I get to drive said car. But "we" got a Dodge Charger for my husband!

And I am jealous. But hey, he's been driving this for 5 years:

Complete with multiple dents.

He probably deserves to drive this:

Complete with racing stripes.

2. Teenagers are terrifying. Until they start laughing. Then they're just like normal people. Pretty much I made fun of myself (and vampires) and they let me keep talking. Good times. (And, yes, I'm planning to torture you with full details and tips for school visits. Patience, my pretties.)

3. If I worked near an In 'N Out Burger joint, I would eat a double-double every double-day. Holy double-yum.

4. I got a package from my wonderful friend, Christine. It was busted to bits.

Inside, it held three items she had mailed me, and three she had not. Veeeerrry interesting. Whoever was supposed to get these, I'm sorry.

5. As of Tuesday, I have now been married for 14 years. Yay me! (PS. We picked up the Charger on our anniversary. I totally counted it as my gift to my husband.)

6. My six-year-old daughter might be more excited about POSSESSION than I am. She told her kindergarten teacher that I'd written a book. Her teacher said that was exciting, and that Daughter could bring it in. So she begged me to let her take my ARC to school.

Did I do it?

Uh, yeah. I let her take the book in a large ziplock bag. Daughter showed the class. They talked about how many pages it had (404, said "forty-oh-four" if you're six and just learning that numbers go above say, 10). Then, in the words of my kidlet, "We made our own books. Mine had 5 pages."

7. Did you miss the Across the Universe giveaway on the blog yesterday? You wanna get on that, because I'm announcing the winner on Monday, and you have until 10 PM Sunday night to enter. Go buy AtU!

8. Let it be known that I steal blog ideas. You've been warned.

Got anything I need to know today? Lay it on me.

Happy anniversary, congrats for being the object of awe for a classroom of young readers, and glad to hear your school visit went well! I confess to being intensely curious about the other two unanticipated items in your busted box.

That's so cute! I'm sure the Kinders were impressed!;) And I'm glad the teens weren't so scary after all!

Natalie Aguirre said...

Congrats on the car. That's so cool about your daughter. Mine was also proud that I wrote when she was in grade school & told all her teachers. She got me a few author visits there. Have a great weekend!

Congrats on the new car and your wedding anniversary.
Umm...would you mind sharing the beat sheet you made for novels? Thanks!

Theresa Milstein said...

This sure is a mixed blog! How cool your daughter is so proud of you. Cooler she got to hold the ARC. I'm so jealous!

I can't wait to hear about your school visit. Yes, humor, especially the self-deprecating kind is the way to go. It's not often they can relate to adults.

Have a great weekend!

Very cool that your daughter brought your book to school for show and tell. The ziplock bag was a good idea :-)

Corinne said...

Congratulations on the new car and the anniversary!

Also, that story about your daughter is adorable -- and I'm enough of a nerd that I love that your novel has four-oh-four pages. ;)

Happy anniversary! I'm jealous of your daughter and your husband LOL They get to read POSSESSION and drive around in a Charger!!! Life's good sometimes =) Enjoy!

Jen Daiker said...

I love your confession at the end!!! Stealing blog ideas is okay as long as they're good ones. At least that's what I tell myself when I steal one.

If I'm cute as a button like the little one will you let me take an ARC to school?! Please...pretty please *flutters eyelashes* (is it working?)

Happy Anniversary!!! That's a sexy car and I'm with you, so count that as a gift!

Happy anniversary! Your daughter is the cutest...
Oh, and hot car!

I wish I'd seen your presentation to the teens. I want to see what you said to make them laugh.

Interesting what happened to Christine's package. That's terrible that you ended up with things she never sent you.

CAN'T WAIT to read possession. :D

Matthew Rush said...

Wow! Lots of awesome stuff in here. First of all congratulations! Happy Anniversary.

You can steal from me anytime, assuming I ever do anything cool enough.

Holy week of awesomeness! And too flippin funny about Christine's box LOL At least the stuff she DID send you made it (hopefully in one piece). Still laughing about your extras lol

LOVE your daughter taking your book to school...so sweet! :D

Crystal Cook said...

I love that your daughter did that. :) How completely awesome! Also a Dodge Charger is one of my favorite cars ever, congrats on the 14-year-gift! Also thank you for the chance to win ATU, I've been DYING to read that but have been on a strict book buying budget which is no fun at all. And I'm very intrigued about the blog ideas you steal. Can't wait for that.

Talk about a great anniversary present. I think my husband would take on the job of cleaning the toilets for life if I let him get a Dodge Charger.

And your daughter sounds adorable. She's grooming your future readers right there.

Bonnie R. Paulson said...

I was thinking the same thing as Wendy, drugs?

Congratulations on marriage and Car and kid bragging about you!

I don't know if you know this, but I love the barbed wire on the header of your post! How's that for what you should know today?

Carolina Valdez Miller said...

Happy anniversary, Elana! Gorgeous pressie for the hubs.

Sounds like you've had a nutty week. That package was something else, that's for sure. Are you sure that wasn't the real gift you'd intended to give to your husband?

E.J. Wesley said...

A ride that sweet should count as his next 6 anniversary gifts! (He'll be cool with that, trust me.) AND congrats!

What is UP with the socks and mystery additions to the package? I'm not sure I even know what WTF means, but I am sure this would be an appropriate time to use the saying. That would freak me out for some reason ...

Although, it does add some fun and mystery to checking the mail each day. "Bill, bill, credit application, ad, random dude's underwear .... nope, nothing good today."

Katie Ganshert said...

That is aesome that your daughter brought your book to her kindergarten class! Also, I'm excited to hear more about the high school visit. :) Congrats on the 14 years!

Christine Danek said...

Yikes about the package. Mail can be scary.
Happy Anniversary! Me and my hubs will be 13 years this year. Nice gift and it totally counts.
Love In and out burger, but we don't have any here. **frowns**
Stealing ideas? :)
I'm hosting a blogfest and hoping to get through five chapters of revisions despite the kitchen renovation and kids constantly needing something to do. Will I be sane next week? Not sure.
HAve a great weekend!

It’s adorable your daughter bragged about you to her class. Congrats on making it though the teenager chat.

Charli Mac said...

Holy molly batman! When did you get married, when you were 12? You look great!

Congrats on the anniversary, I married my HS sweetheart.

Hilarious mail story...how in the world did you get those other things? The socks any good. I love new socks.?

If I worked at a burger joint, I'd need to be medi-vaced out of the building. I'd never leave and I'd be 1,000 lbs.

I totally steal blog ideas. By buddy Camille cracks me up every day. I blog-burgular her all the time. Rubble-rubble. http://www.camillereads.com/

You think teeneagers are terifying? No way, try the tweeners. Even worse. I should know, I have one.

Happy weekend.

Ecellent! Great job E!

1. I'm super curious to know more about the mysterious pkg and how it spawned things that weren't sent.

2. Why is the acronym for Beth's book AtU instead of ATU? Because the THE does t matter

3. AND tbe Charger looks Sooo much cooler with the stripes

Lydia K said...

That is so cute she brought the ARC to school. I'll bet she was super proud!
And nice wheels, sweet!

suffering from new car envy. I suppose I will go console myself with guylinered Johnny Depp *sigh* with a dash of Orlando Bloom ;)

Gail said...

Bringing an ARC to school for "Show and Tell" (ack! that term really dates me!)is great but mild. When I taught 1st grade, a student wanted to bring in something about his dad who was a motorcycle cop. He brought in an 8 X 10 glossy of dad greased up, showing of his muscles wearing a speedo! Apparently dad competed in baody-building contests when he wasn't riding the motorcycle!

Shari said...

Happy Anniversary!

Congratulations on your new car. My sister got a new one and I'm uber jealous 'cause my car kinda looks like the one your husband used to drive.

I LOVE the story about your daughter. It was soooo cute! I love kindergartners, and how fun that they got to make their own books that day.

I think I entered the giveaway, but I'd better check! *hurrying to yesterday's post*

Laura Marcella said...

That's adorable about your daughter!!! She's so proud of you, Elana. :)

I received a package from a blogger friend that was all busted up like that. And unfortunately, a couple things had either been lost or stolen from mine. Not cool! I'm glad you got all your items!

And a very happy anniversary to you and your hubs!!!

Happy Anniversary!
Sweet new wheels! I tell my children that I didn't get a new car until I was 30 (true story, I bought used til then) so they won't expect anything big and shiny when they turn 16!
How sweet that your daughter is so proud of you!!! And then wrote her own book!
And I wish we had In N Out burger here. But I'll have McD's for lunch. I really will.

Miriam S. Forster said...

Happy Anniversary! (Apparently the universe sent you socks for your anniversary. How odd.)

Oh, and Happy Anniversary!!! Whoop!

Joanne Fritz said...

"Forty-oh-four" -- that is sooo adorable.

Wish we could have all been there to hear your talk to the teens. Must have been fascinating as well as funny.

And that package makes me wonder about trusting Priority Mail. Ulp!

Congratulations on 14 years. If you've made it that far, he OUGHT to let you drive the car. At least a couple of times. Sheesh!

lynnrush said...

Happy 14 years! That's freaking awesome. Love hearing about stuff like that. My hubby and I celebrated 14 last August. Woot!!!

Totally sweet car! Congrats. How fun is that? We just got our first "new car" in 12 years last August as well. Isn't that funny? Course, it was an Altima...nothing near as fun as a Charger!

Thanks for this post. It really made me smile.

Catherine Denton said...

Um...that you're adorable? Also, my daughter (who's been a vegetarian for a year) tried soy bacon for the first time and thought it tasted exactly like bacon. I tried it and disagreed; but it wasn't as bad as I expected.

Melissa Gill said...

Happy Anniversary. That's a really cool car. So great that your daughter brought your ARC to school.

I hear you on In-and-Out burger. Thank God we don't have any of those here, I'd be the size of a house, instead of a double-wide.
